Family Wellness: Improving Your Children's Posture

Written By Kabel Chiropractic on July 10, 2018

It’s tough to get children to do anything, even if it means improving their health.

Your children have probably heard the phrase “stand up straight!” without realizing the real-life benefits this simple piece of advice will have.

Poor posture caused by heavy backpacks and inactivity can lead to other more serious problems as your child’s body continues to develop.

However, with a boost of encouragement and proper pediatric chiropractic care, you will be able to improve their posture and teach them healthy habits for the future.

Explaining the Importance of Proper Posture to Your Children

Posture is the manner in which you hold your neck, back, spine, and entire body in place. Proper posture puts the least amount of pressure on your spine. Poor posture results in increased stress on your spine, which leads to pain and discomfort.

The first step to improving your children’s posture is helping them become aware of how they hold themselves. Do they slouch when they sit? Can they feel pain in their neck or back muscles?

Common causes of poor posture are:

  • Overweight backpacks
  • Extended time of non-activity
  • Repeatedly bending neck (like when using phones)
  • Hunching over

Learning proper posture at a young age will benefit your children as they grow older.

How to Improve Your Child’s Posture

Limiting screen use is one way to improve your child’s posture, but it certainly won’t be easy. The best way to develop better posture habits with them is to offer alternatives and make it fun.

For example, switch out a desk chair with a stability ball. Your child can bounce on it and strengthen their core at the same time. You can also revamp their work/play space by finding appropriately sized furniture and adjusting their computer screens to the right height.

Additionally, prevent future back and neck pain by making sure their backpacks are no heavier than 10% of their body weight.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care for Better Posture

Both children and infants can benefit from regular visits to the chiropractor. This holistic approach provides safe and effective treatments for current pain while also teaching your children the importance of healthy habits.

The pediatric chiropractic treatment that Dr. James Kabel of Kabel Chiropractic received at a young age for his arthritis led him to set up his own practice later in life.

This first-hand experience has led him to develop a non-invasive approach centered around healing, prevention, and teaching children about spine health.

So why wait to get your children on the path to perfect posture?
